Solidarities in dispute: Interdisciplinary project of the PUCV addressed the global poly-crisis

Martes 23 de septiembre de 2025

The analysis of the solidarity concept in the face of global poly-crisis is the central purpose of the “Solidarities in dispute in the contemporary world” project, recently awarded at the 2025 Centenary Projects Contest from the PUCV. The initiative, propelled by VINCI through the Direction of Research, seeks to delve into solidarity as a research object, exploring its conceptual dimensions and practical expressions.

The team is comprised by researchers of seven academic units, among them the Departments of Philosophy and Education, Economic and Administrative Sciences, Ecclesial Theology, Ocean and Geography Sciences, and Architecture and Urbanism.

According to Laura Jordán, scholar from the Music Institute and project director, this initiative seeks to “recover past and present experiences with solidarity, to get to know and promote action and meaning repertoires that communities have developed to face the structural violence that shapes our societies”.

Jordán also noted that, due to the rise of extremism and several global crises, it is key to recover common good, equality and social justice, addressing topics such as politics of care and the crisis of humanism in the face of ecological and humanitarian challenges.

Interdisciplinary study core areas

Research will be organized around three core areas. On one hand, it will study international organizations, social movements and solidarity networks that act beyond government borders. It will also analyze institutional forms of solidarity and its current reconfigurations from debates over care.

Finally, there will be an exploration of new solidarity expressions that emerge in the face of the ecological and climate crisis that affects our planet. “This project wants to shed light on experiences and strategies that give us hope for a common future”, Jordan explained.

The project will be developed from an interdisciplinary perspective, with the participation of scholars from different PUCV departments – such as Fernanda Lanfranco, Raúl Burgos and Hugo Herrera – together with specialists from universities in Chile, France, Italy, Colombia, Spain, Uruguay and Germany.

In addition, the project considers activities to connect with social organizations, such as an art exhibition and music, ecology and care workshops, seeking to create impact and serve as a model for innovative collaboration.
