Modeling of structure, virtual reality and Artificial Intelligence: PUCV students teach about their careers to school students

Jueves 17 de julio de 2025

At the PUCV, undergraduate students share their knowledge from very early stages, guiding secondary school students in their first approach to the university world with the goal of providing them with vocational orientation in relation to each program.

Classes, workshops and guided tours through campus facilities are part of the activities designed and led by PUCV students. One of the recent activities were the winter workshops organized by the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Promotion Unit.

At the School of Construction and Transportation Engineering, Catalina Navarro and Vicente Osorio, both fourth- and third-year Civil Engineering students, respectively, lead a workshop on BIN methodology, an approach for management and building of structures that centers on the creation and management of a digital model of the project that can be observed in a Virtual Reality format.

“We model a building on a software and then we use virtual reality to show them how this technique is performed, which is current in construction since it cuts costs, reduces environmental impact of the work and also construction times”, Catalina mentioned.

The PUCV student valued the experience of teaching in the same classrooms where she learns daily, since it’s a tool that adds knowledge to her training. “This action is very enriching since besides showing others something that I like, it is also useful to reinforce, to review and learn more, going in-depth into the engineering world”, she expressed.

Vicente Osorio has a similar opinion. “It is very rewarding because both my parents are in the teaching field. This is a path to continue to strengthen an area that motivates me, and I also feel that I am having a positive impact on them since my approach has always been to help people, and by leading students I feel I can fulfill this”, he said.

At the same time, at the School of Electrical Engineering, tours throughout the various laboratories are carried out, where students from grades 9 to 12 can interact with the electrical power systems and the Artificial Intelligence developed at the PUCV.

Javiera Vega, third year student of Civil Engineering in Telecommunications, is a tutor for this tour, and she highlights the presence of female students. “It makes me very proud because as a woman I think it is relevant that more girls are interested in the Engineering field. I am happy to encourage more girls to enter the university and choose a program that has so many applications both in the industry and research fields”, she stated.

Richard Hernández, fifth-year student of Civil Engineering in Telecommunications, highlighted the fact that students are coming from an early age “to visit our labs and be surprised by the things we are developing together with the university. It is very rewarding to receive questions and interest, and a great opportunity to guide future professionals on these first glimpses at the university”, he commented.
