Biografía

Dr. Leda Guzmán is a Biochemist (Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology), Full Professor at the Institute of Chemistry, and Head of the Biomedicine and Biocatalysis Research Laboratory at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (PUCV) since 2007. In 1997, she obtained her Ph.D. in Biological Sciences and Molecular Biology from Universidad Complutense de Madrid. From 1998 to 2000, she completed postdoctoral training with Dr. Dietmar Pieper at the National Center for Biotechnology – GBF, Braunschweig (Germany), and with Dr. Bernardo González at the Microbiology Laboratory of the Faculty of Biological Sciences, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.

Until 2006, she worked as a researcher at the National Immunology Reference Center of the Institute of Public Health (ISP). Since then, she has led multiple research projects-both publicly and privately funded-focusing on the development and application of natural antimicrobial and antitumor agents, with applications in cancer, atopic dermatitis, and oral health. She collaborates actively with Prof. Dr. Elisabeth Grohmann (Faculty of Life Sciences and Technology, Berlin University of Applied Sciences) and with the company Desert King Chile.

Dr. Guzmán is the author of more than 40 scientific articles published in international peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and is the inventor of three patents related to innovative formulations and therapeutic applications of bioactive compounds. She has supervised over 40 undergraduate and graduate students and teaches in the Biochemistry undergraduate program, as well as in the Ph.D. programs in Chemistry (PUCV) and Biotechnology (PUCV – Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María).
Since 1998, she has been a member of the Chilean Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and since 2023, a member of the Chilean Society of Cosmetic Chemists. In addition, she has participated as Visiting Professor at the University of Applied Sciences in Berlin, contributing with lectures and research collaboration. Finally, is an ambassador and Editorial Board Member of Current Issues in Molecular Biology
