Excursion

As part of the 6th Symposium on Mathematical Work (ETM6), there will be an excursion to the house of Pablo Neruda de Isla Negra (Av. Brasil 2950) located in Poeta Neruda s/n, Isla Negra, el Quisco.

Then, you will go to Fundo El Cuadro - Camino La Vinilla Km.14, Casablanca, Región de Valparaíso for lunch.

History of Pablo Neruda's Isla Negra house

Due to the evocative power of the objects it keeps and its environment dominated by the presence of the sea, Isla Negra's house is a kind of visual and material compendium of Neruda's poetic imaginary.

The place was originally called Las Gaviotas. The poet renamed it Isla Negra (Black Island) because of the colour of its rocky outcrops and perhaps because he could isolate himself there to write. When he returned from Europe to Chile in 1937, he was looking for a place to dedicate himself to his Canto General, a great book about American history and nature. "The wild coast of Isla Negra, with its tumultuous oceanic movement, allowed me to give myself passionately to the enterprise of my new song," he noted in his memoirs.

Practical information

The excursion will depart on Sunday, December 16, 2018 from the front of the Central House of the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaiso at 9:00 AM, in a bus ready for the walk.
